Viewing an image

nordicICE has many functions enabling you to see the interesting details on an image, or get a better overview.

The following steps assume that at least one image has been loaded.

1. Increasing the image size

The size of small and medium sized images can be increased. To increase a small sized image to a medim sized image:

1.     On the Main menu, select the Modify menu and the Increase image size menu item

Repeat the above step to increase the size from medium to large.
Repeat the step once more to decrease the size from large to small.

You can alternatively use the shortcut Ctrl-E or the toolbar button
Increase icon

2. Magnifying the image

Images can be magnified to display details.

1.     On the Main menu, select the Modify menu and the Zoom menu item.

2.     To increase the magnification, click within the image and drag the mouse down.

3.     To decrease the magnification, click within the image and drag the mouse up.

4.     To turn magnification off, repeat step 1.

You can alternatively use the toolbar button Zoom icon

3. Panning the image

Magnified images do not fit within the image window. Hence you can pan the image to display the part of the image you are interested in.

1.     On the Main menu, select the Modify menu and the Zoom menu item. (The panning functionality is only available when zooming has been turned on.)

2.      Click within the image and drag the mouse down to increase the magnification.

3.     On the Main menu, select the Modify menu and the Pan menu item.

4.     Click within in the image and drag the mouse in the direction you want the image to move. (It is possible to drag the mouse out of the image window for a grater drag length.)

5.     To turn off panning, repeat step 3.

6.     To turn of the zooming, repeat step 1.

You can alternatively use the toolbar button Pan icon

4. Smoothing the image

In enlarged or magnified images, the pixels become enlarged, and the pixel edges become visible. To remove the visible pixel edges, you can smooth the image.

1.     On the Main menu, select the Modify menu and the Increase image size menu item twice to maximaize the image

2.     On the Main menu, select the Modify menu and the smooth menu item.

Notice that the pixel edges no longer are visible.

1.     To turn smoothing off, repeat step 2.

2.     On the Main menu, select the Modify menu and the Increase image size menu item once to revert the image size to its original size,

You can alternatively use the toolbar button Smooth icon

5. Changing the image intensity and contrast.

An ordinary screen can only display 256 different shades of gray. A normal image has a greater span than this between its maximal and minimal pixel values. If you have an image where the interesting information is stored in pixel values spanning a small portion of the total span of the pixels in the image, you can change the image intensity and contrast to maximize the use of the shades of gray on the screen for the interesting pixel values.

6. Palettes

To simplify recognizing different body parts and their abnormalities, standard mappings between relative pixel values and colors have been defined.  These mappings are called palettes. nordicICE comes with some standard palettes. The palette in use is displayed on the right-hand side of the image window. To change the palette:

1.     On the Main menu, select the Modify menu and the Palette submenu, or use the top line menu directly.

2.     From the submenu that becomes available, select Cardiac palette. (This is for demonstration only, the Cardiac palette is not a good palette for the head...)

Notice how the Cardiac palette makes differences between small pixel values visible in the background.
To revert to the original palette:

1.     On the Main menu, select the Modify menu and the Palette submenu.

2.     From the submenu that becomes available, select the Grayscale palette.

Tips:

  • You can invert the palette by selecting Invert Palette on the Modify menu.
  • You can see information about how an image has been zoomed and panned by selecting Zoom/Pan info... from the View menu.
